Around 30 participants from North America attended the second meeting of the ISCC Technical Committee North America on July 9 in Chicago.
Latest developments within ISCC and in the EU market were discussed. The working group on "National adaptations of ISCC" presented its results which will provide further guidance for audits in relevant states in the US and will be uploaded to the member section of the ISCC website after acceptance by the Technical Committee. The second working group on "ISCC PLUS" provided insight into the challenges with respect to sustainability certification in the food industry and further application of ISCC PLUS. Presentations from ADM and Cargill described that there is a need for sustainability certification of commodities entering the food markets and that ISCC PLUS is well-positioned to fulfill those requirements. It was agreed that in the North American market ISCC will focus on the further development of ISCC PLUS.
In addition, developments in the Californian biofuel market with respect to the possible use of sustainability and greenhouse gas certification schemes such as ISCC were presented by CHS. ISCC will further analyze options in the Californian market and has already entered discussions with the California Air Resources Board on this issue.
The minutes and presentations of the meeting are available as download in the member section of the ISCC website.
A next meeting of the Technical Committee is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2014.

Inaugural meeting of the ISCC Technical Committee North America
On November 27, 2012 the inaugural meeting of the ISCC Technical Committee North America took place in Minneapolis
There had been great interest in establishing this Technical Committee, and almost 40 participants from Canada and the USA attended the inaugural meeting. Representatives from agricultural companies, the processing industry, retail and certification bodies attended the event as well as representatives from research institutions and associations. The production and procession chain of corn and soy were represented as well.
The participants discussed experiences with ISCC in North America and identified potential for further improvement. Included in the discussions were initial certifications in the chemical industry as well as the application of ISCC in the food and feed industry. A working group of the Technical Committee will analyse the possibilities to align the ISCC procedure for farms to national regulatory frameworks and compile suggestions for amendments. First results are expected for the beginning of 2013.
The next meeting of the Technical Committee is presumably taking place in June 2013. Dates will be communicated by ISCC in due time. Should you have interest in participating in the Technical Committee North America and in the working group please contact ISCC.
