ISCC PLUS offers smart options to extend sustainability certification to food, feed, technical/chemical and bioenergy applications

A new certification system for food, feed, technical/chemical (e.g. bioplastics) and other bioenergy (e.g. solid biomass) applications has been developed: ISCC PLUS. An overview on the system was given at the Second ISCC Global Sustainability Conference and General Assembly in Brussels on February 8, 2012. The current status of the ISCC plus system documents is available here.
The consultation period will end last week of May 2012. Comments from all stakeholder groups are welcomed.
ISCC PLUS offers a smart opportunity for already certified conversion units (ISCC DE or ISCC EU) to extend sustainability certification to food and feed products (e.g. oil seed meal, DDGS, oil for food and other uses).

2nd ISCC Global Sustainability Conference and ISCC e.V. General Assembly on February 8, 2012 in Brussels

On February 8, 2012, the annual ISCC Global Sustainability Conference and General Assembly of the ISCC association’s members took place in Brussels for the second time. The open conference was very well attended: More than 160 participants listened to the interesting speeches and took part in the discussions. The conference provided information about the most important developments concerning the general conditions for regulation on European level and about the most actual insights concerning climate protection and biodiversity, as well as on their impact on enterprises.

The conference also illustrated the experience with ISCC certification gathered by almost 1.200 companies from 52 countries and gave an outlook on future developments. Group Certification was explained by using the example of smallholders in India. The application of sustainability requirements for biokerosene, solid biomass for electricity and heat generation and for conventional markets were also discussed.

You can download the presentations here.

After the open conference, the General Assembly of the ISCC association’s members and invited guests took place. The Minutes of Meeting will be available soon in the client’s sector.

European Commission has recognized ISCC as one of the first systems for the certification of sustainable biomass and liquid bioenergy

Cologne, Brussels - 19 July 2011 - The European Commission has recognized today ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) as one ofthe first systems for the certification of sustainable biomass and liquid bioenergy (fuel and electricity) which is recognized by the European Commission in Brussels. As a result ISCC can be established as a proof for sustainable biomass on a worldwide basis. The EU stipulates in a directive the use of sustainable biomass for biofuels and liquid biomass.
The recognition of ISCC as a internationally well proven certification system for sustainability and greenhause gas emision savings applies directly in 27 EU member States for all kind of biomass and bioenergy.

ISCC is one of the founding members of aireg e.V.

On June 08, 2011 the association “Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany – aireg e.V.” was set up in Berlin. Leading companies from the aviation industry, bioenergy producers, research institutions and the ISCC System GmbH will push the exploration of climate neutral and sustainable aircraft fuels and thus tackle one of the most pressing challenges in the aviation: the finiteness of fossil energy sources. Dr. Ramsauer, German Minister of Transport and participant of the foundation ceremony appreciated the engagement of the new initiative to sustainably strengthen the air transportation in Germany. Dr. Klaus Nittinger, president of aireg, remarked that a further expansion of the activities to a European level would be possible.

ISCC General Assembly: Positive summary after one year of certification of biomass

ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), the first international certification system to prove sustainability and greenhouse gas savings for all kinds of biomass, gave a positive summary after one year of operation.

Speakers from associations, industry, trade and NGOs reported on their experiences with sustainability certifications. Amongst others the European Commission informed about the status quo and the future development of the Renewable Energy Directive and the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection talked about the expansion of sustainability requirements on markets outside of the bioenergy sector. From Brazil was reported about the efforts that were made to build up a sustainable soy production and which role ISCC plays within that process.
