Argus Biofuels Europe

The Argus Biofuels Conference will take place in London, England on 15 17 October 2024. The conference will cover biofuel value chains, including Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and Sustainable Marine Fuels.

Adam Kirby, ISCC Sustainability Manager, will hold a presentation on “Certifications: Addressing the issues of transparency of raw materials.” He will provide an overview on the certification basics, the certification processes for credible deployment of sustainable fuels, and credible and transparent claims in voluntary markets.

The Argus Biofuels & Feedstocks Latin America took place in São Paulo on 19 20 June 2024. During the conference Brazil’s biofuels strategy and business goals as well as Latin America’s biofuels potential were discussed.

Aleksandra Blazeusz, ISCC System Manager, joined the trading and certification panel discussion on 19 June on: “Could Latin America become an exporter of feedstocks and products in the long term and is the environment ready for trade?” With a growing focus on the sustainability and traceability of raw materials, this session dove into the certification requirements across Latin America and in the US and Europe.


Circular Plastics Packaging South and Central America

11 12 June 2024, Medellin, Colombia

The Circular Plastics Packaging South and Central America took place in Medellin on 11 12 June 2024. The event covered several topics, including an overview on the plastics regulation, packaging trends and innovations and a packaging market outlook.

Dr. Lea Eggemann, Project Manager at MEO Carbon Solutions, represented ISCC during this conference. She joined as a speaker on 11 June and held a presentation on the certification of the supply chain integration of circular raw materials including information on the regulatory framework developments in the EU, mass-balance and attribution approaches as well as sustainability and carbon footprint certification of recycling and the use of bio-based materials.

The Sustainability in Packaging Asia took place in Singapore on 04 06 June 2024 as a hybrid event. The event covered different topics including new technologies and innovations in packaging material, the regulatory landscape and practical examples from brand owners.

Jasmin Brinkmann, Team Lead Logos, Claims and Licensing, joined as a speaker on Thursday, 06 June. She held a presentation in session 6 “Sustainable packaging in practice” on the ISCC PLUS certification scheme for the circular economy and bioeconomy and how to make credible claims.


IATA Aviation Energy Forum (AEF)

28 30 May 2024, Vienna, Austria

The IATA Aviation Energy Forum (AEF) took place in the Hilton Vienna Park Hotel in Vienna, Austria. AEF is the premier industry meeting for the world’s aviation fuel community and a unique platform allowing airline representatives, fuel and SAF suppliers, and other IATA strategic partners to discuss the industry’s priorities and agree on actions to enhance efficiency and productivity, and better understand what the airline commitment to deliver on the net zero 2050 pledge will mean.

Thomas Bock, Senior System Manager and Team Lead Aviation & Maritime, participated in the up-front workshop on SAF sustainability certification with IATA airlines. He was also part pf the panel on “SAF Accounting: Where we are and the way forward”. Additionally, Thomas Bock participated in the workshop on “Understanding SAF Sustainability Certification – A Joint Guidance Document”.


Webinar: A Pathway to Circular Economy – Mass Balance Approach

During the webinar organized by EuroCham the Mass Balance Approach and its potential to accelerate the transition to a circular economy and bioeconomy was discussed.

The 6th Annual Sustainable Cleaning Products & Formulation Conference took place at Hotel Lombardia in Milan, Italy, on 15 16 May 2024.  This 6th edition covered sustainability metrics, green ingredients, sustainable packaging, formulation & hygiene & consumer impacts. With the sustainability efforts of most cleaning product firms, the conference focuses on reducing environmental footprints and sustainable sources of raw materials in the cleaning sector.

Sina Tischbierek, ISCC PLUS System Manager, participated as a speaker on 15 May and held a presentation on “ISCC PLUS certification: Ensuring material traceability along the supply chain for a circular and bioeconomy.”

The CMT’s Biomass Innovations Asia 2024 took as a hybrid event on 13 15 May 2024 in Tokyo. The event focussed on the latest developments in the biomass and biofuel market.

The Smart Freight Week will take place at Circa Amsterdam. The event provided and excellent networking opportunity for the SFC community to learn more about the latest developments tied to decarbonizing freight and logistics.

The International Bunker Conference IBC

23 25 April 2024, Oslo, Norway and Kiel, Germany

The International Bunker Conference IBC was hosted onboard of the M/V Color Fantasy on 23 25 April 2024. The focus of this year’s IBC was on the bio movement and the recent EU and IMO regulations.

Dr Norbert Schmitz, Managing Director at ISCC, joined as a speaker and hold a presentation on 24 April from 12.15 12.45 PM on Certifying Sustainable Fuels.


Sustainable Biofuels Workshop

23 April 2024, Paris, France

The Sustainable Biofuels Workshop, organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), took place on 23 April 2024 in Paris, France. During the workshop, the opportunities and challenges of ramping up sustainable biofuels were discussed with stakeholders from international organizations, government and industry.

Rob Vierhout, Chairman of the ISCC Association, participated in the workshop and represented ISCC.


IPIECA Week

22 26 April 2024, London, UK

The IPIECA (International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association) took take place in London on 22 26 April 2024. The event will focus on decarbonization strategies in the Aviation & Maritime Sector, where certification plays a crucial role.

During the “Certification & Chain-of-Custody” session, Dr Dario Formenti, ISCC System Manager, joined as a speaker and delivered a presentation on Certification of Sustainable Aviation & Maritime Fuels.

22 24 April 2024, Singapore

The Argus Biofuels & Feedstocks Asia Conference took place in Singapore on 22 24 April 2024 offering networking opportunities with key stakeholders from the industry. The focus of this year’s conference was on the commercialisation of new biofuel pathways.

Vasu R Vasuthewan, Advisor at ISCC, joined as a speaker on 22 April and hold a presentation in the Sustainability and certification session. He provided an overview on SAF certification and gave an outline of the ISCC SAF credit transfer system.


The Adhesive and Sealant Council 2024 Annual Convention

15 17 April 2024, Louisville, Kentucky

The Adhesive and Sealant Council 2024 Annual Convention took place on 15 17 April 2024 at the Omni Louisville Hotel. The event covered different sessions focussing on Market Disruptors, Manufacturing Technology, Sustainable Practices and the Impact of AI on Adhesive & Sealant Innovation among others.

Dr Jan Henke, Director at ISCC and MEO Carbon Solutions, participated as a speaker in the session on “Driving Sustainable Products to Market; Metrics and Challenges” on 17 April taking place from 10.15 10.35 AM. He held a presentation on “Certified mass balance and attribution approaches”, introducing the certification system ISCC PLUS and explaining the mass balance and attribution approach and its implementation across value chains. He spoke about the recognition of mass balance approaches by industry and brand owners and within regulation and showed examples of credible certified claims for final products.

The Argus SAF Forum took place in Madrid, Spain on 10 April focussing on regulations, pricing and logistics of SAF.

Thomas Bock, Senior System Manager and Team Lead Aviation & Maritime, participated in the opening panel on “From theory to practice: How will regulations come into affect?” He focussed on the aspect of “What sustainability requirements does SAF need to have to be EU mandate-compliant?”


The European Biopolymer Summit

The European Biopolymer Summit took place in on 26 – 27 March 2024 in Ghent, Belgium. The event brought together leading experts in the biopolymer industry.

Tire Technology Expo 2024

18 21 March 2024, Hannover, Germany

The 23rd Tire Technology Expo took place in March 2024 in Hannover, Germany. The event is Europe’s most important tire manufacturing technology exhibition.

Dr Jan Henke, Director at ISCC and Meo Carbon Solutions, delivered a presentation on March 20th at 11:35 AM. The focus was on the integration of certified and sustainable raw materials for the tire production, specifically emphasizing on the utilization of sustainable natural rubber and recycled raw materials. In addition, it was elaborated how ISCC provides support and guidance to ensure compliance with EUDR requirements.

Lastly, Dr Jan Henke demonstrated how third-party multi-stakeholder certification systems can be used to credibly certify the sustainability of rubber plantations, identify raw materials and recycled materials, establish traceability based on specific chain of custody approaches, determine recycling rates and how to make on and off-product claims to customers.


Chemical Recycling

12 13 March 2024, Houston, Texas

The Chemical Recycling took place on 12 13 March 2024 in Houston, Texas. During the event the challenges and opportunities for recycling systems as well as industry trends and the growing importance of mass balance accounting were discussed.

Dr Jan Henke, Director at ISCC and Meo Carbon Solutions, joined the Fireside chat on 12 March at 11.50 AM explaining mass balance certification. The session was followed by a Q&A session.


European Green Ammonia Summit

06 07 March 2024, Düsseldorf, Germany

The European Green Ammonia Summit took place in March 2024 in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Summit brought together different stakeholder such as green ammonia producers, hydrogen providers and renewable energy providers to discuss market trends and innovations in the sector.

Dr Dario Formenti, ISCC System Manager, participated in a panel discussion on “Sustaining and optimal value chain for green ammonia” and presented the ISCC approach for the certification of Power-to-Ammonia, RFNBO-NH3 and generally renewable-derived chemicals.

The 2nd Annual World Biopolymers and Bioplastics Innovation Forum took place on 28 29 February in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Bringing together more than 150 industry experts, the event provided a platform to discuss new challenges and opportunities in bioplastics and sustainable biocomposites.

The Bio-Oils Forum, hosted by the The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, took place in Copenhagen.

Fuels of the Future

The 21st edition of Fuels for the Future took place in Berlin, Germany and was held both in German and English. More than 60 speakers from various industries discussed new market trends and potential uses of renewable fuels.

Dr Norbert Schmitz, Managing Director at ISCC, held a presentation about certification of sustainable fuels for road, air and sea transportation on the global markets.


Global Forum for Food and Agriculture Expert Panels

18 19 January 2024, Berlin, Germany

The Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) is an international conference on agri-food policy issues hosted by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The GFFA Expert Panels took place on 18 19 January 2024 in Berlin, Germany. The Expert Panels were organized by different actors from politics, science and business with the aim to discuss current topics of the GFFA and enhance professional exchange and discussions.

Dr Jan Henke, Director at ISCC and MEO Carbon Solutions, joined the panel on Zero Hunger in agricultural production: Not yet a reality, but achievable! Working together for human rights in supply chains. Together with Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e.V., he elaborated on the Food Security Standard (FSS) and discussed with stakeholders the importance and needs of implementing food security in agricultural production.

29 – 30 November 2023, Berlin, Germany

During the 2nd Sustainable Maritime Fuels Forum & the 2nd edition of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Forum took place in Berlin, Germany. The events served as a platform for companies across the value chain to discuss challenges and latest developments toward a greener future.

Dr Norbert Schmitz, Managing Director at ISCC, joined both events as a speaker. During the Sustainable Maritime Fuels Forum he shared his expertise on Sustainability certification for biofuels as a key piece in the puzzle towards net-zero. During the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Forum, Dr Norbert Schmitz held a presentation in Session VI “Flight to compliance and 2025 readiness in aviation”, giving an update on the latest developments in certification of SAF and credit transfer.

The European Sustainable Plastics Summit 2023 took place in Frankfurt, Germany as a hybrid event. During the summit topics such as the development of bio-based plastic and the path to carbon neutral circular plastics were discussed.

Business Forum on Bio-Methane and Green Hydrogen

The Business Forum on Bio-Methane and Green Hydrogen will take place in Vienna, Austria. The event aims to explore the Ukrainian landscape with regards to bio-methane and green hydrogen sectors in Ukraine. In this third external webinar organized by TSA (Trinseo’s Sustainability Academy), “Mass Balance Approach in Advancing Plastics Circularity”, Cindy Ormaza, Trinseo’s Sustainability Procurement Specialist and Corporate Mass Balance Officer, introduced and explained the Mass Balance concept with a virtual example, its recognition status as well as present a case study.

Dr Jan Henke, Director, ISCC and Meo Carbon Solutions, joined her. He presented the ISCC PLUS certification system, detailing the Mass Balance and attribution approach and its implementation throughout the value chain. He discussed the recognition of these methods in voluntary markets, among brand owners, and potential upcoming regulations. Examples were provided to showcase how brand owners can make credible and certified claims using the ISCC licensing approach.

Meeting with U.S. Pact Activators

The meeting with U.S. Pact Activators aims to educate Activators on the key issues of PCR certification, so they can help craft and ultimately adopt an official U.S. Pact position on PCR. The webinar hosted by aireg and DWV on e-Kerosene: Sustainable Coverage of Import Demand took place online at 6:00 pm CET (in German language) and covered the topics all around future freedom and mobility as well as preserving those achievements. The use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) based on the entire range of available raw materials can contribute significantly to this challenge. However, SAF are currently only available in limited quantities and not across the board. How can future demand be met and compliance with sustainability requirements in manufacturing and also along global supply chains be ensured? ISCC contributed as speaker.


Data Monitoring within the Plastic Value Chain
