2nd Sustainable Maritime Fuels Forum & 2nd Sustainable Aviation Fuels Forum

29 – 30 November 2023, Berlin, Germany

During the 2nd Sustainable Maritime Fuels Forum & the 2nd edition of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Forum took place in Berlin, Germany. The events served as a platform for companies across the value chain to discuss challenges and latest developments toward a greener future.

Dr Norbert Schmitz, Managing Director at ISCC, joined both events as a speaker. During the Sustainable Maritime Fuels Forum he shared his expertise on Sustainability certification for biofuels as a key piece in the puzzle towards net-zero. During the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Forum, Dr Norbert Schmitz held a presentation in Session VI “Flight to compliance and 2025 readiness in aviation”, giving an update on the latest developments in certification of SAF and credit transfer.

European Sustainable Plastics Summit

21 – 22 November 2023, Frankfurt, Germany

The European Sustainable Plastics Summit 2023 took place in Frankfurt, Germany as a hybrid event. During the summit topics such as the development of bio-based plastic and the path to carbon neutral circular plastics were discussed.

Jiwon Sung, ISCC PLUS Senior System Manager, held a presentation on supporting sustainable supply chains: ISCC PLUS certification for bioplastics.

During the 9th edition of the Sustainability Heroes Conference learnings and newest developments with regard to the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (dt. Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetztes (LkSG)) were discussed.

Business Forum on Bio-Methane and Green Hydrogen

27 September 2023, Vienna, Austria

The Business Forum on Bio-Methane and Green Hydrogen will take place in Vienna, Austria. The event aims to explore the Ukrainian landscape with regards to bio-methane and green hydrogen sectors in Ukraine. This includes legal and legislative frameworks, along with strategic and policy plans. Furthermore, the event aims to thematize various topics along the supply chains, featuring European legal framework and examples, market players active in Europe and interested in Ukraine, and presentation of projects in an advanced stage in Ukraine. Crucially, the event will provide the scene to focus the attention on specific topics raised by the supply chain players, and provide the opportunity for market players and state institutions alike to network and carry out bilateral discussions.

The Webinar “How to use chemically recycled content in your packaging”, hosted in an online format, will focus on the usage of recycled content in food-contact and healthcare packaging, necessary steps to take and ways to obtain the right certification.

Jasmin Brinkmann, Senior System Manager at ISCC, will be joining as a guest speaker and will elaborate on the mass balance approach and how it works to track and account for chemically recycled content as well as on how to make certified recycled content claims through ISCC.

TSA: Mass Balance Approach in Advancing Plastics Circularity

13 September 2023, Online Webinar

In this third external webinar organized by TSA (Trinseo’s Sustainability Academy), “Mass Balance Approach in Advancing Plastics Circularity”, Cindy Ormaza, Trinseo’s Sustainability Procurement Specialist and Corporate Mass Balance Officer, introduced and explained the Mass Balance concept with a virtual example, its recognition status as well as present a case study.

Dr Jan Henke, Director, ISCC and Meo Carbon Solutions, joined her. He presented the ISCC PLUS certification system, detailing the Mass Balance and attribution approach and its implementation throughout the value chain. He discussed the recognition of these methods in voluntary markets, among brand owners, and potential upcoming regulations. Examples were provided to showcase how brand owners can make credible and certified claims using the ISCC licensing approach.

The webinar hosted by aireg and DWV on e-Kerosene: Sustainable Coverage of Import Demand took place online at 6:00 pm CET (in German language) and covered the topics all around future freedom and mobility as well as preserving those achievements. The use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) based on the entire range of available raw materials can contribute significantly to this challenge. However, SAF are currently only available in limited quantities and not across the board. How can future demand be met and compliance with sustainability requirements in manufacturing and also along global supply chains be ensured? ISCC contributed as speaker.

This workshop by the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology is aiming to set up a clear image of why a future-proof data monitoring system is needed by sharing and discussing information from different perspectives. This image is needed to take the next steps, where the scope for a potential project in a new consortium is being collaboratively defined.
