Players in the Food and Feed Market are Increasingly Interested in Sustainability Certification

Certifications with ISCC PLUS are taking off with players in the food and feed market being increasingly interested in sustainability certification. ISCC PLUS certification is therefore used for an increasing number of products in the food industry. Consequently the ISCC on-product logo and corresponding consumer claims appear on more and more products in grocery stores. The European Commission emphasizes sustainable food production and supply chains with their Farm to Fork Strategy.

ISCC certified soft wheat

Barilla has launched a charter, Carta del Mulino, for farmers producing the soft wheat that is the main ingredient in Mulino Bianco’s bakery products. The charter, which was developed with WWF, will help farmers to promote biodiversity. As part of Carta del Mulino, Barilla commits to sourcing 100% of the soft wheat from ISCC certified sustainable agriculture. The ISCC PLUS scheme will provide the assurance that the mills, bakeries and farmers adhere to sustainability, traceability and no-deforestation requirements.

ISCC certified corn-based sweeteners

Hungrana, one of the very first companies to become ISCC certified in 2010, achieved ISCC PLUS certification in 2017 at the request of a worldwide soft drinks company, now a major customer for Hungrana’s ISCC PLUS certified corn-based sweeteners. In 2017, Hungrana purchased more than 700,000 tonnes of ISCC certified corn from 190 farmers. Through the ISCC PLUS Add-on “Greenhouse Gas Requirements”, Hungrana gains additional advantages for consumer brands.

ISCC certified rum

In 2017, the entire supply chain for the production of Botran Rum gained ISCC PLUS Certification, ensuring that the rum production but also the sugarcane is free from deforestation whilst respecting biodiversity, the environment and people’s rights. In total, there are 3,300 hectares of ISCC certified sugarcane.

ISCC certified sugar cane

The second largest sugar exporter in Latin America and the Caribbean, with 50,000 hectares of ISCC certified sugar cane, Pantaleon, has been ISCC EU certified since 2014 and also obtained ISCC PLUS certification in July 2017. The company clearly sees the advantage of the compliance with the SAI Silver Level that comes with the ISCC certification, as this wider acceptance of ISCC opens up new markets for certificate holders.

ISCC certified shea

AAK from Denmark has chosen ISCC certification for their shea supply chains. The producer of shea works closely with the women who collect the shea and improves their empowerment by, e.g. providing micro credits, pre-finance, logistical support or training to improve the first processing steps of shea in the villages. Since 2017, AAK provides sustainable shea that can be used for instance as an ingredient for skin care products.

ISCC certified sugar

Ingenio Sucroalcoholero Aguaí, the sixth and newest sugar mill in Bolivia, has implemented sustainability throughout their whole supply chains for sugar. The company has just produced its first ISCC certified sugar for the food market. By displaying the ISCC Logo on all of the sugar bags produced, Aguaí differentiates its product in the local market leading to improved sales opportunities.

ISCC certified sunflower oil

Vénusz sunflower oil is made from ISCC PLUS certified sunflowers. The ISCC Logo on the packaging of the sunflower oil guarantees that the necessary amount of raw material for the manufacturing of this product has been sourced from sustainable cultivation. By purchasing ISCC-compliant seeds, Vénusz encourages sustainable cultivation methods, thus promoting the operation of sustainable farms. Bunge Hungary is selling this oil since September 2016 on the Hungarian market.

ISCC certified olive oil

Olearia Clemente is the first company in the olive sector internationally to have its extra virgin olive oil certified under ISCC PLUS. “Olearia Clemente has chosen a path that is integrated into the European Farm to Fork strategy, one of the pillars of the Green Deal that aims at climate neutrality in Europe by 2050, unequivocally traces the obligatory path that all companies must undertake to be more competitive. ” – Vincenzo Verdoliva of L’Officina GBS
