Sustainable Road Transport Fuels

Sustainable fuels for road transport became increasingly relevant after the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) of the European Commission (EC), which has set a number of legal sustainability requirements for the production of sustainable fuels from both bio-based feedstocks and waste and residues.

Sustainable Road Transport Fuels Covered Under ISCC Certification

  • Biofuels (liquid fuels for the transport sector produced from bio-based feedstocks)
  • Biogas/Biomethane
  • Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO)*
  • Recycled Carbon Fuels

*As of 13 February 2023, the European Commission (EC) adopted new rules on how to define hydrogen and its derivatives as renewables. The adopted delegated acts (DAs) supplement the Renewable Energy Directive (REDII) by establishing a methodology, setting out detailed rules to produce RFNBOs. ISCC is seeking the recognition of the ISCC EU certification approach for RFNBOs as soon as possible.
