25 October 2024
It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Prof Gernot Klepper, PhD, former ISCC Chair, who left us on 23 October at the age of 73, after battling a severe illness. As a distinguished environmental economist, Gernot was a leading voice in climate policy and sustainable development, known for his impactful work bridging the gap between science, policymaking, and practical implementation.
Gernot built a remarkable career, including his role as Department Head at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), where he was a key figure in advancing research on ecological sustainability and the economic governance of climate issues. As a founding member of the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Association back in 2010, he was elected to the ISCC Board that same year and served as Chair from 2011 until the end of 2023. Gernot helped establish the organisation as a globally recognised framework for certifying sustainable practices, guiding its mission with his vision and strategic foresight. His efforts ensured that ISCC’s approach was not only theoretical but practical, effective and impactful on a global scale.
Gernot’s expertise, visionary thinking, and work ethic have been invaluable, and his governance as Chair of the ISCC Association has paved the way for many of the achievements ISCC is proud of today. Beyond ISCC, Gernot’s passion for sustainable development drove him to support the launch of related initiatives advancing certification, such as the foundation of GRAS – Global Risk Assessment Services, where he served as an Advisory Board Member. He was also actively involved as an external advisor in several sustainability projects led by Meo Carbon Solutions.
More recently, Gernot focused on the certification of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and the development of the ISCC Credit Transfer System, enabling transparent and verifiable trade of sustainability credits. He represented ISCC at numerous international conferences and participated in projects for the World Bank, the United Nations and various government organisations.
As a passionate researcher, Gernot was always interested in translating scientific knowledge into actionable solutions. He saw ISCC as a tool to integrate science-based strategies into real-world practices to combat climate change. His voice will be greatly missed in ongoing discussions on climate change, biodiversity loss and social issues, as well as how these challenges can be addressed within the ISCC certification framework. His exceptional ability to distil complex issues into clear, actionable insights and his dedication to making the world a better place will always be remembered.
Gernot was a respected mentor and source of inspiration to those who had the privilege of working with him. He was known for his sharp intellect, keen sense of humour, and remarkable ability to listen and to understand, which made him a beloved colleague. Beyond his professional life, he found inspiration and balance through sports, often spending his free time engaged in hiking or avid road cycling. His contributions will continue to influence and inspire us for many years to come.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Gernot’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. His legacy will continue to inspire us, and he will be greatly missed.
In profound gratitude for his life’s work, we honour his memory.
