When it comes to making a meaningful impact, collaboration is key. That’s why we’re celebrating DHL Express and Shell’s one-year joint deal that took effect between October 2023 and October 2024.

The two global companies agreed to supply and use ISCC PLUS certified Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for air freight transport at Brussels Airport.

What did the deal include?

As the core part of this agreement, Shell delivered 25 kt of ISCC PLUS certified SAF via pipeline to Brussels Airport. DHL Express then used the transported SAF for their international air freight operations. Brussels Airport serves as a key transport hub for European and international air freight.

When compared to the use of standard jet-fuel, SAF reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an estimated 80 kt CO2 equivalent versus fossil fuel.

ISCC certification documents that SAF is produced according to strict sustainability requirements, including sustainable feedstock, verified reductions in GHG emissions, and traceability throughout the supply chain. Learn more about how we certify SAF.

Certified SAF, delivered by ISCC

For us at ISCC, this deal marked another significant recognition for our system and the work that we do.

“It’s inspiring to see two leading international organisations choose ISCC-certified SAF to advance their ambitious sustainability goals. We take great pride in knowing that our certification system is at the heart of such a large-scale initiative, driving positive growth throughout the industry.”

Adam Kirby, Senior Sustainability Manager – Sustainable Fuels, ISCC

Joint deals such as this one are great examples of how companies can collaborate to achieve their sustainability goals, and how our certification can help validate their progress.

Shell Aviation is one of the world’s leading energy providers for airline fuel. Their president, Raman Ojha, commented on the deal, saying, “By supplying SAF, we are equipping the industry – and our customers – with low-carbon solutions that will support the transition toward sustainable aviation.”

Looking ahead

Certified SAF is currently the most important way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As our certification numbers continue to increase, we are looking forward to seeing more joint deals like this one in the near future.
