We herewith inform you about updates in the ISCC System. Please share this information with all relevant members of staff.

1.Nabisy Update (only relevant for ISCC EU)

Herewith we inform you that the German Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) has implemented types of biomass for which default values are available according to RED II in Nabisy. The updated list of the current biomass types can be found here in the help section of the Nabisy website. Please note that the update of the biomass codes does not affect all biomass types with default values according to the RED II.

Furthermore, since 01 October 2021, biogas plant operators who want to carry out an exact calculation and use the so-called manure bonus can enter this accordingly in the formula. For this, esca (emission savings due to better agricultural management practices) was adapted in the formula accordingly. Entries for emission savings of up to 130 g/MJ CO2eq are now possible.

2. Updates on ISCC Documents

ISCC EU List of Materials

ISCC has revised the “ISCC list of material eligible for ISCC EU certification”. This was done to incorporate adjustments resulting from the RED II especially regarding the certification of waste and residues. Raw materials that may be certified as a waste or residue under ISCC EU are now indicated with one asterisk (*) in table 1 (raw materials). For such materials the auditor must determine whether the respective material meets the definitions of waste or residue at the point of origin. This approach applies now also to those materials that were formerly marked with two asterisks (**). If evidence can be provided to the auditor that competent national authorities have officially classified the respective material as a waste or residue, the auditor must only verify that the material was not deliberately produced or intentionally modified or contaminated. The same applies for material that is clearly indicated as a waste or residue in the RED II. Please also refer to the revised guidance in the material list.

Table 1 “Raw material”

The following raw materials were added/amended:

• Animal by-products (category 1 – 3 and uncategorized): Newly added. This category may be used for waste or residues generated in slaughterhouses which are subsequently used e.g. in a biogas plant.
• Animal fats from rendering: Adjusted to reflect the wording used in the RED II.
• Brown grease / grease trap fat: Clarification that this category shall exclusively be used for material that is removed from grease traps. This category shall not be used for material that is removed from the sewage system, e.g. fats, oils and grease (FOG). This adjustment reflects the latest version of the UK positive list. This category shall also not be used for used cooking oil.
• Food waste: Additional information was revised.
• Sewage Sludge: This category shall now also be used for so-called “fatbergs” (fats, oils and grease or “FOG” from the sewage system). A clarification was added that operators collecting this material must provide evidence on the traceability and plausibility of the collected amounts to be verified during the audit. Furthermore, it was specified that this category does not cover so-called “gutter oil”.
• Sewage system FOG (fats, oils and grease): This category was deleted as the material shall be reported under “sewage sludge”.
• Soapstock acid oil contaminated with sulphur: This material was previously covered under “Waste/residues from processing of vegetable or animal oil”. It was added as individual category due to its status in the UK.

Please note that the ISCC EU and PLUS material lists can be amended. In case a material should be certified which is not listed yet, please note that ISCC must be contacted prior to the issuance of the certificate via info@iscc-system.org.

The current versions of the ISCC EU and PLUS lists of materials (both as of 03 December 2021) are available here in the client section of the ISCC website (login required).

ISCC EU and PLUS Sustainability Declarations and ISCC EU Proofs of Sustainability

The ISCC EU Sustainability Declaration (SD) (v2.2) and ISCC PLUS SD (v3.2) have been updated to reflect the updated ISCC EU and PLUS material lists. The updated templates can found here in the client section of the ISCC website (login required).

The ISCC Blue Proofs of Sustainability (POS) have been updated (v2.2). Both templates – for final biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels as well as for biogas/biomethane – now include a ticked checkbox that the material is EU RED compliant. Further, checkboxes have been added to allow for the statement that a material is ISCC compliant. In addition, the chain of custody option (mass balance or physical segregation) can be indicated.

Please see ISCC EU System Document 203 chapter 3.3.4 to learn more about the claims “EU RED compliant” and “ISCC compliant” and the relevant requirements to forward them in SDs or POS. Both claims are not mutually exclusive, meaning that material can be both ISCC compliant and EU RED compliant if the respective conditions are met.

Lastly, the POS templates were also adjusted to reflect the updated ISCC EU material list. The updated templates can found here in the client section of the ISCC website (login required).
